In addition to satisfying the conjugate positions of object and image and the imaging magnification, optical systems should also meet two other requirements: a certain imaging range; and a certain amount of light energy and the ability to resolve object details at the image plane (i.e., resolution, which is known from diffraction theory to be proportional to the aperture of the light beam).
